SLOVENIA National Initiatives Slovenia has no distinct national initiative supporting SMEs in nanotechnology. The Public Agency for Entrepreneurship and Foreign Investments, PAEFI, was established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia in 1992 with an aim to co-ordinate the Small Business Support Network and entrepreneurship promotion programmes. The mission of PAEFI is to enhance the establishment of entrepreneurship development supporting environment in Slovenia and to accelerate the development of entrepreneurial culture. Regional Development Agencies Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIS) The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS) is an independent, non-profit organisation founded pursuant to a special Slovenian law, with compulsory membership (65143 members) for all enterprises that perform business activities and are registered in Slovenia. CCIS has set up a number of regional chambers offering contact, consulting services and a wide array of promotional activities for SMEs.
Public and Private Centres
The Technology Park in Ljubljana aims at monitoring, identifying, valorising and motivating regional potential as an integrated service for incubating to growingtechnology and knowledge-intensive high potential companies.
Investors
The Slovenian Enterprise Fund is a national finance institution founded with the aim of making funds available for SMEs, thus speeding up their growth and development.
Regulation and Legislation
The Ministry of the Economy was established in 2001 as an amalgamation of previously independent ministries. Amongst others, its aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of and develop the enterprise sector.
The Slovenian Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) is an autonomous body within the Ministry of Economy. It is responsible for the field of industrial property and copyright.
TIPO is the Slovenian Government's Trade and Investment Promotion Agency. Its team of experts provides a wide range of free services helping foreign companies in starting business in Slovenia and the region. TIPO provides information on legislation, taxes and incentives.
The Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia acts under the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. It was established in June 1991, as the Standards and Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia.
Trade alliances and networks
The Innovation Relay Centre in Slovenia is represented by the Josef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana and the University of Maribor, Centre for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Research and Studies – CIMRS.
