Measures targeting high tech SMEs

R&D Tax Allowance
The Income Tax Act (Chapter 123 of the Laws of Malta) allows for deduction of expenditure on scientific research incurred by a person engaged in any trade, business, profession or vocation at 150% of the actual amount of expenditure incurred, for the purpose of ascertaining the total taxable income.

Financial Support

RTDI programme
The National RTDI Programme is aimed at stimulating and building a culture for sustained scientific research and innovation activity by providing financial support for scientific research, ranging from basic and applied research to near-to-market innovation. Potential participants of the Programme include SMEs, University, Public and Private Entities including Foundations and Authorities.

Malta Enterprise
Malta Enterprise is the government’s exclusive agency focused on attracting inward investment and supporting enterprise in Malta. Its role is to act as a single point of contact for all enterprise support in Malta and to provide cohesion to government policies and efforts relating to enterprise in this country. It provides a comprehensive package of assistance and advisory services to international companies and investors considering operations in Malta.

Federation of Industry
The Malta Federation of Industry (FOI), founded in 1946, is the independent voice of the small, medium and large manufacturing and services enterprises which constitute industry in Malta, and is financed entirely by its membership.

Chamber of Commerce
Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise is an autonomous institution aimed at promoting, servicing and representing the interests of the local business community.

Foundation of Human Resource Development (FHRD)
FHRD was set up to promote people management and development practices as well as the development of the human resource profession in Malta.

The Kordin Business Incubation Centre (KBIC)
KBIC is the first Business Incubation Centre in Malta and is operated by Malta Enterprise.

Malta University Services Ltd
Malta University Services Ltd is a limited liability company owned by the University of Malta. Its main objectives are to make the facilities and expertise of the University available on commercial terms to the community at large and to initiate and to promote technology transfer.

IRC Innovation Relay Centre
The mission of the Innovation Relay Centres (IRCs) is to support innovation and transnational technological co-operation in Europe with a range of specialised business support services.
